As we say goodbye to the old year and welcome in the new, it’s time to kick off 2023 with some of the most indulgent and delicious British desserts. If you’re wondering why you should do that, the answer is quite simple.

British desserts are famous all over the world for their versatility. From three-tiered traditional cakes to small cakes served with tea, the British know exactly how to enjoy their desserts.

While a majority of British desserts in the past depended on sweetened bread and a chunk of butter or cream, the traditional recipes have significantly evolved since then. With ingredients like alcohol, toffee, fruits and more, there is a large variety of these delicious delicacies to choose from.

In this blog, we’ll tell you about some of the most decadent British desserts to start 2023 on a sweet note. Our recommendations include traditional desserts but with a few modern twists.

Let’s begin!

3 Unique British Desserts to Kick Off 2023 With

1. Eton Mess

famous british desserts, the Eton Mess dessert

As a traditional English dessert, the Eton mess is made with a heavy filling of whipped cream, pieces of meringue and some sweet strawberries. This dessert is named after one of the most prestigious boarding schools in the UK, Eton College, and was said to be created in the 19th century.

While it is typically made with fresh strawberries, it is not unusual to include other fruits, such as raspberries or blackberries. It is quite simple to make an Eton mess. Simply crush the meringue into small pieces and mix it with whipped cream or your choice of fruit.

For garnishing, you can use pieces of cut-up strawberries or mint leaves. This dessert is usually served in glasses, individual bowls or layered in a trifle dish.

2. Syllabub

famous british desserts. a lemon syllabub

Syllabub is a rich and light dessert with a long history. Originating in the 16th century, syllabub is a fine dessert made with a mixture of cream, wine and sugar. This mixture is whipped until it is light and fluffy, after which, the dessert is served.

Syllabub has majorly evolved over the years in terms of taste. Moreover, there are also many different variations of this sweet treat that you can try. Some versions of it include using cream and citrus juice while others include ingredients like brandy.

A simple way to make syllabub is to whip cream and sugar together until you see soft peaks forming in your mixture. Then, add in wine or citrus juice and continue to whip the mixture until it’s thick and fluffy. Syllabub can be served in a tall glass or goblet and can be garnished with fruit, spices or grated chocolate.

3. Banoffee Pie

classic desserts, the banoffee pie

Banoffee pie is one of the most unique British desserts and one that you have to try at least once. It was first created in the 1970s by Nigel Mackenzie and Ian Dowding, who merged the words “banana” and “toffee”. This is because this famous British dessert is made with a base of crushed biscuits and butter, topped with banana slices and toffee sauce.

It is simple and fun to make a traditional banoffee pie at home. Starting with the crust, you need to mix crushed digestive biscuits with melted butter. You can then press the mixture into the bottom of your pie dish and bake it until it turns golden brown. Once the crust cools, start adding sliced bananas on top of it.

To make the toffee sauce, boil some cream, butter and brown sugar together until the mixture turns thick and sticky. Once it's ready, pour the toffee sauce over the bananas and refrigerate the pie until the sauce has set. Don’t forget to add some whipped cream on top before serving.
